I don't know what alternatives you have in the U.S for ZR-7 and SV650. In 2001 the Performance Bikes magazine group tested a few middleweight naked and half faired street bikes. ZR-7 was despised so much that they thought of leaving it out of the final results. It was heavy, didn't have brilliant brakes, the suspension was soft and performance sluggish. They said it might be sensible bike but doesn't offer any noticeable amount of fun.
I remember the test well because I am going to purchase one of the tested bikes, Yamaha FZS600. Also Honda CB600F Hornet was reviewed well, but I think those models are not available over there. Maybe you'd like to check out the SV650??
